Vivat Lingua! Language training programs - Tübingen

This school is on the pricey side, but it's a generally okay service. The organization is bad, keep it in mind.

I have studied there for several years. I finished B1 and took some of the ancillary courses during the holidays or the conversation course. I took mostly online classes and one class in person. Here are my general impressions.

1. Classes. They are fine, but you need to be aware that one level, say B1, will be divided not into B 1.1 and B1.2 but in four parts, 1 to 4. So depending on whether you take an intensive or semi-intensive (what I took), you are looking into about a few months to a year or more (if you take pauses) to complete a level. Of course, you pay for every section, so at about some 350- 400 euros per course, you get an idea of how much one level costs. One book takes two of the four sublevels, but prices are the same every level. Books are included in whatever you pay, and if taking online classes, you can have either the physical book or the ebook, not both (I asked). I don't recommend the classes in the holidays. It's just more of the same, "talk about your vacation," or "describe your home country/town." The kind of stuff you hear ad nauseum in the regular class. It's just a waste of time and money. I strongly recommend, however, the conversation class. The teacher I had tailored them to what we wanted to speak about, politics, history, and stuff beyond the regular book chapters of every book out there. I also took a course to prepare for an exam. The course was helpful to know what to expect, the timings, sections, all that. But it wasn't useful to practice. The course will give you whatever exercises you can find online or in a prep book.

2. Groups. They tend to be of a few people, and the dynamic is pretty much driven by the people you get in the group. As usual, there will be some show offs. My recommendation is to talk to the teacher if you aren't keen to be with some people in the breaking rooms. I have to admit I was skeptical at first about learning online, but it was helpful.

3. Organization. Here is when it gets hard for me to give more stars. It's NOT smooth, for what it costs, I would expect a much better service. I have had several incidents, mostly inconsequential but annoying nonetheless. Others were frankly upsetting and made me waste time. My experiences:

-I took the placement test and was told I was getting to be in a class, but then I wasn't. I emailed and finally got in. Annoying.

-A few times, I had given my bank details to get the payment deducted automatically. They take a lot of time to do so, and if you ask, you don't tend to get an answer or you get something like it will be taken from your account within a few weeks. That could be anything between the minimum to say weekS, two, or months. I had a course that took months to be charged. Agian, annoying.

-I also had once a time when I signed up for two classes, a regular class and a conversation class. The timings were on the web page for weeks! I arranged my schedule to be able to attend both. A few days before the start of the classes, they go and change the timings and send an email informing us. Now, both classes overlapped, and I had to choose. Like, seriously?

-Then the last thing they did was to ask whether I was interested in a class, I had said yes, and the option to register to said class showed up in the webpage. But then the class never started. It was until I emailed I found out it was canceled. They had taken out the class from the webpage and decided it was okay to not inform those who had registered. Months were lost here, where I could have looked around and found where to go. I registered for this class and received a confirmation. But yeah, they just went ahead and canceled without informing those like me who had signed up. What were they thinking? When I asked, they apologized for "sending the information late," but like, the information came because I asked. I was upset they never did own to their mistake.

*So, good, but confirm everything. Don't trust things will be as they say.*

I can highly recommend Vivat Lingua. From the first steps everyone at Vivat was very friendly and extremely helpful. The classes are well organized and the teachers are highly skilled. Mareike was a great teacher, patient, very personable and friendly every step of the way.
